Joseph Mucheru

Google Sub-Saharan Africa Ambassador and East Africa Lead

speaker_joseph_mucheruMr. Joseph Mucheru is the Google Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) ambassador as well as East Africa Lead, based in Nairobi. He joined Google in June 2007 where he leads the delivery of strategy, business planning and operations.

He has a senior track record which includes successful management of large, cross functional and international teams. Prior to joining Google he worked at Wananchi Online, a company he co-founded in 1999. He held various roles at the company including Chief Technology Officer, Strategy & Business Director and Chief Executive Officer. He attended The Stanford Executive Program at Stanford University in 2008 before that he obtained his undergraduate degree (B Sc. (Hons) in Economics & Computer Science at City University London in 1993 and has since accumulated numerous certifications.

He is a current Board Member of UAP Investments Limited and a Trustee of The Mango Tree Charity whose aim is to improve the well-being of orphans and vulnerable children and nurture them to be self reliant.

He was awarded the Moran of the order of the burning spear in December 2010 by his Excellency the President of the Republic of Kenya, Hon. Mwai Kibaki for his contribution to ICT in Kenya amongst other things.

He is a member of Africa Leadership Network, The National Prayer Breakfast as well as the East African Business Summit.

He enjoys farming, investments, sports, traveling, music, films, politics, business and surfing the net.

Specialties: Identifying strategic opportunities for the companies through research and development keeping in touch with the industry, formulating proposals and translating the opportunities into business projects while minimizing technological risks.

James Mwangi

Global Managing Partner, Dalberg Global Development Advisors

speaker_james_mwangiJames Mwangi is Dalberg’s Global Managing Partner, overseeing the activities of the firm’s 11 offices and more than 120 staff from his base in Johannesburg. He has served a wide range of clients including governments, multilateral institutions, private foundations, major investors, and corporations across Africa and around the world. James has helped new organizations ranging from think tanks to private equity funds to develop business plans and implement launch strategies.

James has also led strategic reviews of several financial institutions seeking to stimulate development in Southern Africa via their investments. He has advised East Africa’s largest bank on its overall strategy and helped two West African heads of state to create new decision-making processes.

Prior to joining Dalberg, James was a consultant at McKinsey & Company. He holds a degree in economics from Harvard University and has been awarded the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Fellowship by the African Leadership Institute.

Lanre Akinola (Moderator)

He covers a broad range of topics relating to Africa across the fields of business, policy and development.
Lanre is a sought-after speaker and commentator on Africa. Some of the organisations and companies he has and continues to work with are the World Economic Forum, the Financial Times, the German Development Bank, The European Commission, The Rockefeller Foundation, The OECD, the Brookings Institute, IBM, Eversheds, as well as Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge University. He has appeared as a commentator on Bloomberg TV and the BBC.

Lanre is also a Trustee and Director at Tutudesk UK, the international arm of the South Africa based Charity. With Archbishop Desmond Tutu as its Patron, Tutudesk offers a practical and highly effective solution to chronic desk shortages for kids across Africa.

A native of Lagos, Nigeria, he holds a degree in politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London.

Ade Adeola

Managing Director, Oil & Gas and Chemicals, Africa, Standard Chartered

speaker_ade_adeolaAde Adeola is the Managing Director, Oil & Gas & Chemicals Africa. He currently has responsibility for leading origination and effective client coverage of Energy and Chemical clients in Africa across the energy value chain. Prior to this role, Ade had functioned as Head, OCC/Wholesale Banking Nigeria; Managing Director/Regional Head, Project & Export Finance, Africa. Ade was also previously Global Head, Oil & Gas Project Finance. During the period of his career he has successfully managed the origination and execution of financial advisory, capital structure and treasury solutions covering project financings, corporate-hybrids, and bridge financings for Oil & Gas and infrastructure project sponsors globally who are developing projects in Africa and also with corporates and governments. He is a member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers UK, and has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Benin and an MBA from Cass Business School, City University London.

Ade is a professional banker with cross-functional experience in Retail banking operations, Treasury as well as Corporate and Investment banking. He began his banking career with OBN Limited a subsidiary of Middle East Bank Dubai UAE in 1987. In 1999, he joined Standard Chartered Bank and has functioned in commercial and investment banking roles in multiple geographies. He has 23 years of core banking experience with over 10 years track record of success in senior management roles in challenging markets. He has been actively involved in numerous corporate and project finance related financial advisory mandates in Oil and Gas, Power and Infrastructure and has led several landmark transactions globally.

Ade is invited regularly as a speaker and trainer on emerging markets financing to international conferences and fora across Europe and Africa. This includes; Euromoney Seminars on Infrastructure & Energy, The Banker (FT) Africa Investment Forum, Commonwealth Business Council, The Law Society of England & Wales, Africa Trade & Investment –Global Trade Review, Gulf of Guinea Oil & Gas conferences, Nigeria Oil & Gas Conferences, The Oxford Business School, Cass Business School and other professional events. This provides him with significant opportunity to share ideas on financing in emerging markets with key market players and to mentor young professionals.

He has served on public-private partnership committees including presidential Committee on Port Reforms- Nigeria, Nigeria-British Consultative Process and has functioned as a resource person on International Trade to Trade Partners UK and the Nigerian-British Chambers of Commerce.
